. >> (male announcer): live from the bay area this is the kron 4 morning news. kron 4 news astarts now with breaking news. >> a massive manhunt underway for one of the two suspects in the boston marathon bombings. the other suspect is dead this morning. will get right to the latest. as we said one suspect in the boston marathon bombings is dead this morning. the other is on the run. we have just learned that the two suspects are from russia. they have lived in the united states for at least a year. now police are a massive manhunt for the second suspect. pamela brown is a watertown. >> of around 9000 officers on a manhunt in watertown, mass. for a man they're calling a terrorist connecting to monday's marathon bombings. >> one officer dead, and

another injured after what has been a very violent night of explosions, shoot outs and a carjacking. >> boston is on as this morning after a night of violence and chaos. >> police responded to the cambridge campus of mit thursday evening when an officer was shot and killed. the area were shut down and the college community warned to stay away. >> if that was the beginning. action, sprung up in the nearby community of watertown. where an alleged carjacking leventhal explosive. gunfire was exchanged and one officer was shot. >> in the exchange of gunfire we believe one of the suspects was struck and ultimately taken into custody a second suspect was able to flee from that car. >> the district attorney's office says that the suspect has died. police are looking for a man that matches the description of a second suspect. wanted by the fbi in connection with the attack at the boston

marathon. >> a door to door manhunt is underway. >> we are asking everyone to shelter in place for the time being and not to leave their homes. >> we have learned that watertown is on lockdown no transit traffic is allowed in and out. all transit in boston has been suspended boston public schools and surrounding universities such as boston university and harvard are all closed as this manhunt continues. >> live in watertown massachusetts pamela brown. back to you. just to recap things. authorities believe the two suspects in the boston marathon bombings are responsible for a night of chaos and bloodshed in the boston area. >> one was killed in a police shootout. >> the other is on the loosed and is considered armed and dangerous. manhunt isy a 20 block area of watertown, mass. under lock down. please explain how the

events unfold. we have a sound bite. >> at about 1030 last evening a robbery took place at a 711 in cambridge. subsequently after that, and mit police officer was shot on campus and has expired as a result of the wounds. >> there was a carjacking that took place as well. this was in cambridge involving a mercedes s u v. that car was ultimately discovered here in watertown, pursued by the watertown police department. >> the police pursued went into a residential neighborhood where there was an exchange of gunfire between watertown police, and two suspects in the s u v. >> during the course of the pursued several explosive devices were discharged from the car at the police

officers. in an exchange of gunfire we believe one of the suspects was struck and ultimately taken into custody. >> a second suspect was able to flee from the car and there was ais an active search. >> and other police officer was struck with gunfire and is in critical condition at a hospital. >> there is an active search by tactical teams by the state police, and the boston pepolice department. the watertown police also involved in the search. >> again, listening to the police describe the sequence of events earlier this morning. police are warning their residence in the area to stay in their homes there not to enter their doors unless they know that it is a police officer. mass transit throughout the entire state has been

canceled, shut down. people are being told not to go to bus shelters, subway stations, to stay in their homes and not congregate in the streets. they want as few innocent bystanders as possible walking the street as hundreds of law enforcement agents are conducting this manhunt. we're getting with this reaction to the kron 4 news room. here's one witness describing what he saw during last night's police chase. we thought we heard firecrackers me and my son looked out the third floor window. we heard gunshots and saw the explosion. i actually, saw a black as you the comedown laurel street it looked like it hit a police car and they were shooting at that we may have heard about 60 gunshot. >> what was the explosion like? >> it was pretty loud it should our house. >> residents west of boston are being told to stay in

>> we are back. the time is 412. will have the latest with the mandan and boston coming up. also bring you up to speed in texas where we had a massive fertilizer plant explosion. 35 people including 10 first responders died in the plant explosion. it happened wednesday night. holly fifer has the latest from the devastated small town. >> life changed in an instant. residents of a small town of west texas flooded the local church denied for a candlelight vigil in honor of the dead and injured. they need a lot of prayer and a lot of help.

first suspect was mortally wounded in the manhunt and shooed out and watertown massachusetts. police would not be a question that suspect. doctors say he suffered when from gunshots and also what appeared to be fragments from a bomb blast. there will be one of the explosive devices it was try to toss that police may have exploded in front of him. in any of it the second suspect is a loose, hiding somewhere in watertown are perhaps in one of the neighboring cities. they have watertown and about a 20 block raise extending out from that city under lockdown. mass-transit has been shut down across the city. anyone driving on the streets. you see the one car is being stopped by police and thoroughly searched to make sure the suspect is not hiding and possibly using the driver against their will. >> the search continues this morning. we will have more as we learn more about the suspect and the latest developments from the scene.
